Obituary

Weldon L. Hendrix, 84, of Henderson, TN, passed away Tuesday, March 23, 2021.

Weldon was born to Joyce and Ruby (Pruett) Hendrix January 16, 1937 in Henderson. Dad was born the 3 rd of six children, with 4 sisters and a brother. His family moved around with his father's work as a minister.  He graduated from High School in Purnell, OK where he played basketball. After high school dad attended Harding College, Searcy, AR, where he met the love of his life  -- Carol Ann Green, from Abilene, TX. They married in May, 1959 and began their nearly 62 years of life together in Rawlins, WY. They later moved to TX, where Greg and Pam were born. After serving in the National Guard during the Cuban Missile Crisis, he owned and operated a gas station/grocery in Joshua, TX, was a route driver delivering milk for Foremost Dairy, worked at the GM auto plant, and began his 30+ year career with the US Department of Agriculture. Job promotions took him and family to Knoxville, TN, Danville, VA, Charleston, SC, and ultimately moved to Memphis, TN, ……where he spent most of his career before retiring in 1997. After retiring, mom and dad combined their joy of travel and love of serving others by joining the Sojourners. They traveled all over the country helping schools, children's homes, and camps by painting and repairing, and churches with knocking doors to invite folks to VBS or Gospel meetings, and helping share the love of Jesus with others.

Dad loved traveling with mom and family. In the summer of 1971 he took the family on an unforgettable 10,200mi round trip to Alaska and back, up and across the provinces of Canada. Other family trips included one to California with stops at the Grand Canyon, the New England States, our nation's Capital, Florida – almost all of the contiguous 50 states.

Dad was instrumental in building a JOY bus program in the 1970's in Memphis at the Raleigh Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon. The program reached the lives of hundreds of children and families, giving them opportunities to learn about Jesus and his love.

He was also a craftsman – building a large 2 1/2 car garage/workshop in Memphis, and a beautiful log home on Greers Ferry lake in AR, where mom and dad enjoyed the lake after retirement. His ability to fix anything with wheels, build anything he set his mind to was legendary among the family.

The most important things to dad were his faith and love of the Lord, his love for mom, his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and family, and sharing his faith and Jesus' love with others. He was instrumental in helping many learn of that love and faith – and become believers. He was ready for his reward.

He's survived by his wife Carol (Henderson), son Greg (Kathy) of Downingtown, PA, daughter Pam Treadway (Doug) of Somerville, TN. Grandchildren – Ashley Hendrix, King of Prussia, PA, Danielle Hendrix, Newtown Square, PA, David Hendrix, Minneapolis, MN; Savannah Hubbard (Jonathan), Bolivar, TN, Brandon Treadway, Somerville, TN. Great grandchildren – Annabelle, Melanie, Reed, and Owen Hubbard, Bolivar, TN. Siblings – Augustine Cheatham (Carl), Montgomery, AL, Paul Hendrix, Lenoir, NC.

He was proceeded in death by three of his sisters – Helen Sargent (2003), Evelyn Conner (2007), and Juanita Benson (2018).
