William A. Hays' Obituary
William A. Hays went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 24, 2018. He was born in Nashville, TN on October 29, 1935. Bill, or "Papaw" as he was affectionately known, graduated from Memphis Catholic High School and attended Christian Brothers College.
He loved music and enjoyed entertaining locally for his family and friends throughout the years.
Bill, in his early years, served in the National Guard and was actively involved civically in the Frayser Jaycees and the Germantown Optimist Club. He also worked for many years serving the community in Shelby County Government. Bill retired as co-owner of Tri-State Carpet in 2004. He was a communicant and sang in the choir at St. Anne Catholic Church in Bartlett, TN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William S. and Hallie M. Hays. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Dorothy M. Hays; one son: Richard A. Hays (Leslie); three daughters: Laurie A. Warrington, Katherine M. Crafton (Mike), and Sandra L. Powell (Steve); eight grandsons: David L. Bell, Jr., Rick Hays, Chris Crafton, Andrew Bell, Chad Crafton, Joe Powell, Jon Powell, and Jacob Powell; one granddaughter, Lauren Hendrix; twelve great-grandchildren; a brother-in law; a niece; and two nephews, whom he loved very deeply. The family will receive family and friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at Forest Hill Funeral Home East, 2440 Whitten Road, Memphis, TN 38133. The funeral will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 10:00 a.m., with a short visitation prior to the service and burial immediately following.
