Willie M. Cardin Sr., age 91, died Tuesday, July 30, at Baptist Hospital in Southaven, Mississippi. He was born February 19, 1922 in Turley, Tennessee. Willie is a veteran of World War II where he served in the 90th division (Powder River Boys) and was a FO in the field artillery. He courageously served in North Africa and went through Sicily and up through the Italian boot to the Gothic Line, where he sustained a wound from a German artillery shell. He earned several medals along with the Purple Heart. In later years he worked for and retired from the Army Depot. Mr. Cardin is preceded in death by his wife and the mother of his children, Dorothy Marie. He is survived by three children: Barbara Jean Philips and husband Wilbur, Willie M. Cardin Jr. and wife Nancy, and Edward H. Cardin and wife Merrie and also his brother Harold T. Cardin and wife Nell and a sister, Patricia Drischel. He is also survived by five grandchildren (Woody Wright, Michael and Brandon Cardin, Tiffani Dusang and Aimee Benavides), 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, as well as many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Sunday, August 4 from 3 PM to 5 PM at Forest Hill Funeral Home Midtown and funeral services will be held Monday, August 5 at 2 PM, also at Forest Hill Funeral Home Midtown in Memphis, Tennessee. The family wishes to thank and honor the members of VFW post 684, the DAV, and the American Legion for their precious friendship to Willie. The family requests that in lieu of flowers all gifts are made to Wounded Warriors Project.
