W. Ann Browning, age 81, of Bartlett, passed away at her home on May 29,2025 surrounded by family and friends. She was born June 11,1943 to Dewey and Lucille Browning in Gibson County, TN, and was raised in Hornbeak, TN. She was an honors graduate of Hornbeak High School and UT Martin with a degree in Education. Ann began her teaching career in Marietta, GA. and retired from White Station High School in Memphis. While at White Station, she taught Honors U.S. History, and World Geography and sponsored their Mock Trial Team. In her classroom, Ann emphasized respect for the perspectives of other people and the need to work toward finding common ground as a way to resolve conflict.
Ann loved to garden, fish, golf, travel and was an avid reader. She had a gentle manner an innate curiosity, and made friends easily. Her travels took her to most of the United States, Central America, Europe, Canada and Asia. Ann especially loved visiting the World War Il memorials in Hawaii and Normandy. Ann loved good food, coffee desserts, her friends, golf and the Lady Vols basketball team. She attended many SEC tournaments, and a couple of Final Four tournaments. Go Big Orange!
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters Mae, Ruth, Thelma and brother-in-law Claude. She is survived by her nephew Claude Denton, Jr (Margie) of Haymarket, VA, niece Susan Emory(Tom) of New Kent, VA, great nephews Jonathan Denton of Richmond, VA, Gregory Denton of Clifton, VA, Thomas Emory of Denbigh, VA, and great niece Elizabeth Layne of Norfolk, VA and four great great nephews: Aiden, Jack, Charlie and Harvey. She is also survived by her best friend and travel partner, Linda Bellis of Bartlett, TN.
The family is so grateful to the wonderful dedicated ladies who cared for Ann: Earnestine Edwards, LaToya Wilson, Brenda Lewis, Shelia Hall, Sharonda Wilkins, Shaneika Moore, Ty Moore, Felicia Moore, Sharon Foster, Kissey Kelly and Melanie Nicholls.
A Celebration of Life will be held on July 12, 2025 at St. Philip Episcopal Church, 9280 Davies Plantation Rd, Bartlett.
Visitation will be held at 10 AM followed by the service at 11 AM with interment immediately following at Antioch Cemetery in Hornbeak TN.
