Zelpha Bennett Smith, age 93, went peacefully to be with her Lord on April 5, 2014. She is survived by her daughter, Melanie Smith Russell, her son-in-law, Grady Russell of Bartlett, TN, and her beloved grandchildren, Mark Russell of Cordova, TN and Sarah Russell of Nashville, TN. She was born on April 7, 1920 in New Albany, MS to Hubert and Mary Lou Bennett. She graduated from New Albany High School and attended Hinds Junior College on a basketball scholarship. On July 17, 1941, she married Robert Turner Smith, and settled with her husband in Memphis. She retired from Naval Air Technical Training Center, where she worked as an accountant. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Memphis, where she taught Sunday School for many years, and served as a Sanctuary Hostess. She was a founding member of the City View Garden Club. Zelpha, who was a vibrant Southern lady, will be remembered for her talent as a seamstress and her love of gardening. Guests will be received on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Parlor of First Baptist Church. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church Chapel. Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church Memphis, or St. Jude Children''s Research Hospital.
